The difference between an agent and a broker is contractual obligation: an agent is first obligated to the company, a broker is first obligated to the client. At first blush, most people desire a brokerage relationship even though an agency relationship may, in some instances, better protect client interests. (Generally speaking, if a mistake is made in placement, the consumer has recourse to the insurance company in an agent relationship; recourse stops with the broker in a brokerage relationship.) At Gwaltney & Associates, we view ourselves as intermediaries regardless of our contractual obligation, where all successful relationships are based upon mutual respect, loyalty and profitability.
